The Challenges facing AC offshore substations for wind farms

This article highlights the challenges and issues in the design, construction and operation of offshore substations for wind farm connections. A CIGRE working group has been established to examine these issues, provide guidelines and advise on best practice. Here we report on the early findings, principally the design challenges these substations present. Advice on managing these issues will be reported on in the TB to be published in 2011.
